535 5.7.0 (#AUTH005): Too many bad auth attempts

Yahoo / AOLSMTPSign-in problem

The error usually looks like this:

535 5.7.0 (#AUTH005) Too many bad auth attempts.

What it means

Yahoo rejected the sign-in after repeated failures. Yahoo and AOL require an app password (or OAuth) for email apps.

Common causes

  • The app is using the account’s normal password instead of an app password.

How to fix it

  1. Generate an app password in your Yahoo or AOL account security settings and use it in your app.
  2. Or use Auth-Email, which supports Yahoo and AOL with OAuth.

Tools to help diagnose it

Can’t update your app to use OAuth?

Auth-Email fixes sign-in errors like this one without changing your app, printer, scanner or script. It signs in to Yahoo / AOL with OAuth on your app’s behalf, while your app keeps using a normal username and password over IMAP, POP or SMTP.
